Eric Davis, an Anniston native, was a first-team All-Gulf South Conference performer after leading JSU to a 13-1 record and a berth in the NCAA Division II national finals in 1989, helping the Gamecocks to the GSC title. He was a member of the GSC’s All-Decade team for the ‘80’s. He signed with the San Francisco 49ers, and quickly established himself as one of the finest defensive backs in the NFL. A two-time All-Pro selection, Davis had an interception, two passes defensed and six tackles in Super Bowl XXIX en route to a 49ers championship. In 1992, he received the 49ers Ed Block Courage Award in voting by his teammates after overcoming a serious shoulder injury. Davis was also selected NFC “Defensive Player of the Month” in October of 1993 after gathering 23 tackles, two interceptions, returning one for a touchdown, and returning a fumble for another score in four games. He signed with the Carolina Panthers in 1996, and earned Pro Bowl honors once again. Davis is currently the Panthers all-time interception leader with 15. A standout person both on and off the field, Davis is the spokesman for “Stand Proud”, a joint program between North and South Carolina Panthers that encourages fathers to be good parents.
