JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State softball team will host Southeast Missouri in a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series at University Field.
The weekend will begin with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday and conclude with a single game at 1p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free for all fans.
The Gamecocks (21-7, 8-0 OVC) look to improve upon their second-best start in OVC play since joining the league in 2004, while the Redhawks (8-16, 4-2 OVC) have won each of their first two conference series.
JSU had its 13-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday in a 4-2 loss at Middle Tennessee but has won 19 in a row against OVC foes. The Gamecocks have not played the Redhawks since 2009 after their 2010 series in Cape Girardeau, Mo., was cancelled by rain.
This weekend's series will feature three of the Ohio Valley Conference's top hitters. JSU junior Kristin Graham leads the OVC at the plate so far this season with a .492 batting average, just ahead of teammate and fellow junior Abbey Stepp, who is second in the league with a .453 average. SEMO's Carmen Fowler is batting .421 on the young season, which ranks fourth in the league.
The Gamecocks have been using the long ball to generate much of their offensive success so far in 2011. They are sixth nationally in home runs per game and have the top three home run hitters in the league, with Graham and senior Amanda Crow tied in the lead with eight apiece. Stepp is in third with seven.
Freshman Tiffany Harbin leads the JSU pitching staff with a 13-4 record, tying the Hazel Green, Ala., native for 16th nationally in wins. She holds a 2.76 earned run average to guide a staff that boasts a collective 2.52 ERA.
