BOX SCORE
JACKSONVILLE – Freshman
Tiffany Harbin made history for the Jacksonville State softball team on a day in which the Gamecocks needed it.
The native of Hazel Green, Ala., tossed the first nine-inning no-hitter in school history on Sunday to lead the Gamecocks (31-11, 16-3 Ohio Valley Conference) to a 1-0 win in extra innings and complete a three-game series sweep of Austin Peay at University Field.
On a day in which the OVC's top offense struggled to put a run on the board, Harbin shut down the Lady Govs (10-33, 5-16 OVC) until her offense could get one across. That run finally crossed in the home half of the ninth, when fellow freshman
Hayden Crawford crossed on an errant throw by Peay third baseman Tiffany Smith.
Crawford, a native of Sparkman, Ala., started the winning rally by depositing APSU starter Morgan Brewer's first pitch of the ninth through the hole for JSU's fifth hit of the afternoon. She stole second on Brewer's next pitch and then scored when junior
Kaycee Crow's sacrifice attempt forced Smith to throw the ball down the right field line.
Harbin was dominant in the circle for JSU, allowing just three baserunners and never one past first base to improve to 19-5 on the year. She walked one and hit another, and a first-inning error allowed the only other runner to reach. She struck out 10 batters for the second-straight day after she allowed three hits in a seven-inning complete game that led to a 5-2 JSU win in the series opener.
She tossed 83 of her 128 pitches for strikes and retired the last 16 batters she faced and got some help from her defense. In the eighth, the Lady Govs hit two line drives, but the first was caught by a backhanded grab from shortstop
Tess Echols and the second caught by a diving
Sallie Beth Burch at second.
Brewer (6-12) was tagged with a tough-luck loss in the circle for Peay after holding JSU, the league's top-hitting offense, to an unearned run in eight innings of work. She surrendered just five hits and walked three without recording a strike out.
The Gamecocks scattered their five hits, all singles, among five batters, with Echols and junior
Abbey Stepp each drawing a walk to go along with their base hits.
The Gamecocks improve to 20-6 in the all-time series with Peay and have now won their last nine against the Lady Govs.
JSU will be at home on Wednesday, when the Gamecocks host Tennessee Tech in an OVC doubleheader at 3 p.m. at University Field. Admission is free for all fans.
