Jax State Tennis Splits At Eastern Kentucky

RICHMOND, Ky. – Jacksonville State tennis turned in a split against Ohio Valley Conference foe Eastern Kentucky on Saturday as JSU's women topped EKU, 4-3. The Colonels bested the Gamecock men, 6-1.

The Jax State women rebounded from its Friday 4-3 setback to Morehead State – its first conference defeat since the 2009 season. JSU's three-match win streak in league play came to a halt on Saturday. JSU's women moved to 7-10 overall and 4-1 in OVC matches, while men's squad fell to 9-10 on the season and 4-2 in the league.

In the women's contest, the Gamecocks fell behind 1-0 after dropping the doubles point, but rebounded quickly with four wins in singles to clinch the match. Martina Desbesell turned back EKU's Myriem Mhirit at No. 2, 7-6, 6-2. Raisa Guasti won in straight sets over Anouk Faure, 7-6, 6-3. Ralphaela Lima won the opening set over Milena Poffo, 6-2, before Poffo sent the match into a third-set tiebreaker with a 6-4 win in the second set to seal the win. Lima bounced Poffo in the third set, 6-3. Rafaela Wenzel rounded out the scoring for JSU at No. 6 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Sophie O'Neil.

In the men's duel, Jax State got off to a quick start by claiming the doubles point, but EKU surged past the Red and White by sweeping all six singles matches. The JSU tandem of Nenad Marcec and Axel Sundberg downed EKU's pairing of Philip Janz and Niklas Schroeder, 8-5. The Gamecock duo of Eric Matthieson and Felipe Watanable out-lasted Jan Dombrowski and Carles Pons, 9-8.

JSU's women's squad returns to action on Wednesday, April 6 with a re-scheduled match with Southeast Missouri. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at the JSU Tennis Courts. The Gamecock men get back on the JSU hardcourts on Monday against Mercer at 1:30 p.m.
