Live Stats vs. USM
JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State soccer team enters the second weekend of the season looking for its first win of the season as the Gamecocks travel to Southern Mississippi and South Alabama this weekend.
Jax State and USM will square off in Hattiesburg, Miss. on Friday at 4 p.m. The JSU-USA match in Mobile is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
Last weekend, JSU dropped a pair of matches against Mercer and Middle Tennessee State. Against MTSU last Sunday, Jax State took the defending Sun Belt Champions to the brink in double overtime before the Blue Raiders posted the golden goal.
The Gamecocks and Golden Eagles have faced each other just once on the pitch with JSU recording a 2-0 win over the Black and Gold in 2005. JSU and USA, a pair of in-state rivals, will be facing each other for the eighth time on Sunday. The Red and White have three wins in the series with the Jaguars, including the last meeting in Jacksonville during the 2008 campaign.
USM enters the match at 0-1-1 after falling to Mississippi and carding a draw with Louisiana Tech. USA is coming off a 5-1 win over Southern University on Tuesday after losing its season opener to La. Tech.
In the first two matches of the season, JSU freshman Courtney Hurt has led the offensive attack with a team-high seven shots. Defensively, the Gamecocks have used a two-keeper rotation in goal with juniors Katelyn Geddings and Ali Koenig. Geddings, from Warrior, Ala., finished up the MTSU contest and was credited with a career-high eight saves in her 59 minutes of playing time. JSU Head Coach Julie Davis Carlson has played 21 of the 26 players on her roster in the early stages of the season to help build depth at all positions.
After playing the first four matches on the road, JSU will open its eight-match home slate on Friday, Sept. 2 as it plays host to the annual Adidas Gamecock Classic. The first day pits the Gamecocks against Western Athletic Conference member New Mexico State at 7:30 p.m. at the JSU Soccer Field. Prior to the JSU-NMSU duel, Ohio Valley Conference foe Tennessee Tech will face Louisiana Tech at 5 p.m.
