HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Jacksonville State soccer team matched its season-high in shots, but could not capitalize in a 2-0 loss to Southern Mississippi on Friday afternoon at the Southern Miss Complex.
JSU (0-3-0) finished with nine shots in the contest, including four on-goal chances. The Golden Eagles, who earned their first win of the season, tallied 22 scoring opportunities. USM posted the first goal in the 27th minute as Macie Wallace connected from the right side of the box from 15 yards out.
USM (1-1-1) was credited with 16 of its 22 shots in the opening 45 minutes.
“We didn't start off well with good possession and we had too many poor touches and turnovers that put us on the defensive for most of the first half,” said head coach Julie Davis Carlson. “It was very disappointing compared to our starts in the first two games.”
In similar fashion to last Friday's Mercer match, Jax State's offense pressured the opposition in the early stages of the second half. JSU freshman Courtney Hurt had a pair of scoring chances in the span of five minutes, but went wide and was denied by USM keeper Hannah Vanderboegh. Moments after Vanderboegh's save, the Golden Eagles added their second goal of the match off the foot of Chelsea Cruthirds. Cruthirds drilled her shot from 25 yards out to blast it in the left side of the goal at the 54-minute mark of the match.
“We made some tactical adjustments in the second half to generate more offense – it worked, but we didn't finish. Courtney Hurt and Chelsea Pelletier both missed solid opportunities. We did a better job of limiting their offense in the second half,” added Carlson.
Junior Katie Manns finished with three shots to lead the JSU attack. Junior goalkeeper Ali Koenig was credited with seven saves in the opening half, while Katelyn Geddings was in goal for the final 45 minutes.
USM's Wallace turned in a match-high four shots, while Cruthirds finished with three attempts.
The Gamecocks close out their season-opening four match road trip on Sunday with a 1 p.m. match at South Alabama.
