Gamecock Volleyball Splits on Final Day of LSU Tiger Classic

JSU - LSU BOX SCORE  |  JSU - ASU BOX SCORE

BATON ROUGE, La. – After dropping a three-set match to Southeastern Conference power LSU, the Jacksonville State volleyball team got its first win of the Joseph Goodson era with a dominant sweep of Alcorn State on the final day of the LSU Tiger Classic.

The perennial power of the SEC's Western Division, LSU (3-0) handed the Gamecocks (1-3) a 3-0 (25-9, 25-14, 25-12) sweep in their first match of the day, but JSU bounced back in a big way. In the finale of the first weekend of Goodson's head coaching debut, his team rattled off one of the most dominant wins in program history with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-8, 25-12) sweep of the Lady Braves (0-2).

“The team really hung together well,” Goodson said. “We are learning about each other match by match, and we are definitely going to be a very special team.”

Against the Lady Braves, the Gamecocks jumped on them early and cruised. JSU scored the first two points of the first set and never looked back, rattling off 14 kills on just 27 attacks and holding ASU to a minus-.045 attack percentage.

The second set was an even more dominant one by the Gamecocks, who closed with a 17-4 run that turned an 8-4 lead into the 19-point win. They hit .444 and had six service aces in the set, while holding the Lady Braves to just four kills.

More of the same continued in the final set, as JSU needed just 25 attacks for its 16 kills. ASU won the first point of the match, the Lady Braves' lone lead of the match, and was tied as late as 5-5, but the Gamecocks used five service aces and a .480 attack percentage to pull away and finish the sweep with a 25-12 win.

Junior Hivya Leite hit double digits in kills for the first time in her career with a match-high 10 on just 18 attacks, while senior libero Lauren Harkins grabbed 10 digs to go along with her career-high three kills. Senior Liza Senenkova used a .438 attack percentage to record her nine kills, while fellow senior Stephanie Koontz hit .500 en route to her eight kills.

Sophomore Abbey Heredia and freshman Alina Agamy each combined for 34 of the team's 38 assists with 17 apiece. Heredia also dug five balls on the back row for the JSU defense.

ASU had just three players record a positive hitting percentage and saw three players pitch in four kills, each. The Lady Braves managed just 15 kills in the three-set match.

In the opening match of the day, the Gamecocks ran into one of the best programs in the nation and fell, 3-0 (25-9, 25-14, 25-12). The winner of the last six Southeastern Conference Western Division crowns and the preseason favorite to win its seventh in 2011, LSU hit .403 against JSU en route to their third win in as many tries this season.

The Tigers used a suffocating defense to stymie the JSU offense in the win. The Gamecocks got four kills from Leite and three apiece from Koontz and junior Jen Meyer. Senenkova recorded three blocks, while sophomore Kelly Cole led the way with six digs.

The Bayou Bengals got 12 kills on a .611 attack percentage from Madie Jones, while Malorie Pardo assisted 30 of the team's 34 kills. Meghan Mannari paced the LSU back row with 10 digs.

The Gamecocks will return to the floor next weekend at the Georgia State Invitational in Atlanta. Play will begin for JSU on Friday at 2 p.m. CT against the host Panthers and conclude with a pair of matches against College of Charleston and Harvard on Saturday.
