BIRMINGHAM – The Jacksonville State men's and women's tennis teams dropped matches to in-state rival Samford on Wednesday at the Samford Tennis Center. SU topped the Gamecocks 5-2 in the men's match, while the JSU women fell 7-0 to the Bulldogs.
The setback snapped the men's three-match winning streak and dropped the Gamecocks to 3-4 on the season. Jax State slipped to 3-4 overall on the women's side.
In the men's match, the Bulldogs took the doubles point after sweeping all three matches. Jax State's pair of points came by way of freshmen
Jefferson Wendler-Filho at No. 4 and
Mathias Chaim at the five spot in the line up. Wendler-Filho won the opening set over SU's Trey Carter, 7-6, but Carter rebounded for a 6-2 second-set win to force a third-and-deciding set. Wendler-Filho claimed the super tiebreaker , 10-5 for his fourth win of the season. Chaim posted his fourth consecutive win after another three-set marathon. Chaim split the first two sets before outlasting Henry in the third set, 15-13.
At No. 1, JSU's
Pedro Wagner lost the opening set to Elliot Barnwell, 6-4, but rallied in the second set, 6-2. Barnwell edged Wagner in the tiebreaker, 7-6.
In the women's match, SU claimed the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead and continued the momentum in singles by winning five of the six matches in straight sets. Senior
Raisa Guasti won the first set over SU's Stephanie N'tcha, 7-6, but faltered in the second and third set to suffer the loss.
After playing the first seven matches on the road, the JSU men will host Chattanooga on Friday, Feb. 21. Match time is set for 2 p.m. at the JSU Tennis Courts. The Jax State women will also be in action on Friday against UAB in Birmingham.
