JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State's men's tennis team won its fifth consecutive home opener dating back to the 2010 season with a 4-2 win over Chattanooga on Friday afternoon at the JSU Tennis Courts.
The win moved the Gamecocks to 4-4 on the season, while the Mocs dropped to 1-5 overall. JSU has now won four out of its last five matches and the first win over UTC since 2010.
The match did not go Jax State's way early on as the Mocs claimed the doubles point on a pair of 8-7 wins at No. 1 and 2. UTC's top duo of John Peacey and Jorge Varon edged JSU's pairing of
Pedro Wagner and
Jefferson Wendler-Filho, 8-7. The Mocs clinched the doubles point after Luke Sanders and Gino Delavalle turned back
Jaryd Reese and
Felipe Wenzel at No. 2, 8-7.
JSU's No. 3 duo of
Mathias Chaim and
Dylan Gee carded an 8-4 win over Austin Boaz and Derrick Brown.
The Gamecocks rebounded in singles play with four wins in the singles line up. Gee bounced back from his lone defeat in singles on Wednesday at Samford with a 6-1, 6-1 ousting of Sanders at No. 3. Wendler-Filho won for the second straight time at No. 4 with a three-set win over Gino Delavalle. Delavalle claimed the opening set, 6-2, but Wendler-Filho regrouped to win in straight sets – 7-5, 6-2.
After dropping his first three matches of the season, Chaim has strung together five consecutive wins. His fifth singles win came after disposing of Peacey – 6-4, 6-2. Junior
Felipe Wenzel was the fourth Gamecock winner as he downed Brown – 6-4, 6-1.
Jax State will continue its six-match homestand on March 4, hosting Mercer. Match time is set for 1:30 p.m.
