JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's and women's tennis teams battled the blustery winds that moved through the area on Wednesday afternoon to down Shorter University in both match at the JSU Tennis Courts.

The Gamecock men needed little time to dispatch the Hawks, an NCAA Division II opponent and member of the Gulf South Conference – a league Jax State once was a part of before making the jump to Division I, as they claimed a 6-1 win to move over the .500 mark for the first time this season at 6-5.  In the women's match, it came down to a third-and-final set at No. 5 to seal the deal for the JSU women to post a 4-3 victory.  The Red and White moved to 5-7 on the season with the midweek non-conference win.

Jax State sophomore Isidora Knezevic clinched the match for the Gamecocks as she registered a three-set win over SU's Aurore Beltrando at No. 5.  Knezevic won the opening set, 7-5, but dropped the second set 6-0 to force a third-and-deciding set to determine the match and the team score.  Novi Sad, Serbia-native topped Beltrando, 6-4 to claim the point.

The Gamecocks got off to a great start by winning the doubles point after winning at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.  The top JSU tandem of Raisa Guasti and Olivia Nguyen picked up their fifth win of the season with an 8-6 tally over SU's Aurelie Gaborit and Candice Laurent.  The JSU paring of senior Aleksandra Cmiljic and freshman Claudia Marsala turned back SU's team of Danila Chipe and Sicquena Sinclair.

Nguyen notched the second point of the day after disposing of Gaborit 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2.  Danielle Kerindi quick-worked Chipe at No. 4 – 6-0, 6-1.  Freshman Sadey St. Amant fell to Sinclair at No. 6, while Laurrant dropped JSU's Guasti at No. 1 – 6-3, 6-3.  The Hawks evened the match at No. 3 after Samya El Hsissen carded a 6-1, 7-6 win at No. 3 over Jax State Zoe Bizinos.

In the men's match, JSU swept all three doubles matches to claim the opening point.  At No. 1 doubles, Jax State's freshmen duo of Jaryd Reese and Jefferson Wendler-Filho moved to 2-0 on the season together with an 8-1 win over Alexis Catillon and Louis Tourtois.  The pairing of Pedro Wagner and Felipe Diaz topped its opposition at No. 2, 8-4, while Dylan Gee and Mathias Chaim blanked Nikola Pavlovic and Robert Watson.

JSU needed little time to win the match as it won five of the six matches in straight sets with the lone loss coming at No. 1.  SU's Marc Guerry claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win over Wagner.  Reese etched his sixth win of the season at No. 2 over Tourtois, while Wendler-Filho picked up his team-leading eighth win of the season at No. 4.  The São Paulo, Brazil-native downed Arturo Lifshitz, 6-1, 6-1.  It was his fifth consecutive win dating back to Feb. 16.  Gee, Chaim and Felipe Wenzel all recorded wins in the match.

Jax State begins the second half of its six-match homestand on Saturday, March 15 against Austin Peay.  Match time is set for 10 a.m.  The Gamecocks will close out the weekend with a Sunday morning tilt with the Racers of Murray State.
