JSU Men's Tennis Cruises Past Murray State

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's tennis team inched closer to capturing the 2014 Ohio Valley Conference regular season title on Wednesday with a 6-0 thumping of Murray State at the JSU Tennis Courts.

The Gamecocks moved to 7-1 in the OVC and 14-7 overall, will now face Morehead State on Saturday for a chance for their third regular season crown.  The Eagles of MSU enter the 11 a.m. match with a 4-3 conference mark.

Jax State needed little time in securing its third conference win at home as the match lasted just over two hours.  JSU took the first point of the match after claiming a pair of wins in doubles at No. 2 and 3.  The JSU pairing of Mathias Chaim and Dylan Gee bounced the Racers' tandem of Nicholas Mitric and David Hess, 8-2.  Freshman Jefferson Wendler-Filho and junior Felipe Wenzel mirrored that score against Mateo Barroetavena and Anjan Kashyab.

The No. 3, 4 and 5 spots in the singles line up has carried the Gamecocks throughout the season and Wednesday was no different.  Gee quickly disposed of Mitric 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 to earn his sixth win in conference play and his third in the league playing at No. 3.  The London, England-native has strung together five consecutive wins against OVC competition.  Wendler-Filho recorded a team-best seventh conference win by downing Hess, 6-3, 6-3.  Chaim has run off six consecutive OVC wins after breezing past Kashyab, 6-1, 6-0.

Pedro Wagner and Felipe Diaz rounded out the scoring for JSU with wins at No. 1 and 6.  Wagner turned back Adam Taylor, 7-5, 6-1.  Diaz ousted Barroetavena, 6-0, 6-1 for his fourth conference win.

Jax State will honor its two seniors – Raisa Guasti and Aleksandra Cmiljic on the women's tennis team prior to Saturday's match with Morehead State.
