Women's Box ScoreRICHMOND, Ky. – The Jacksonville State's men's tennis team dropped its first Ohio Valley Conference match on Saturday at Eastern Kentucky after having won 10 straight against conference opponents dating back to last March.
The Colonels topped the Gamecocks 5-2 on the EKU campus, while EKU swept the Jax State women, 7-0.
The conference loss for the
Steve Bailey's men's club is the first since falling to Austin Peay last March. JSU (5-7) would go on to win the regular season title and the league tournament championship. JSU finishes the opening weekend of OVC play at 1-1 after turning back Morehead State on Friday.
After EKU took all three doubles matches for the first point of the day and the first singles point at No.2 after Ramon Van Flyman downed JSU's
Pedro Wagner, 6-4, 7-6, the Gamecocks evened the match at 2-all with wins at No. 1 and 3. Sophomore
Jefferson Wendler-Filho won a three set contest over Alex Alvaro. Wendler-Filho dropped the first set 6-3, but regrouped to turn back Alvaro, 6-2, 6-0. He moved to 2-0 on the year in OVC play and 10-1 in his time in the red and white.
Sophomore
Dylan Gee also picked up a win at No. 3 and in a three set marathon. Gee and EKU's Daridge Saidi split the first two sets, Gee finished off the match with a 6-4 win in the third set.
The rest of the matches were closely contested as
Mathias Chaim fell in three sets at No. 4. Sophomore
Jaryd Reese dropped a match at No. 5 and lost in a second set tiebreaker.
The JSU men return to OVC play on March 19 with a trip to Cookeville, Tennessee for a 1:30 p.m. match with Tennessee Tech. The women will face UT Martin on March 21 in Martin, Tennessee.
