Box Score JACKSONVILLE - The Jacksonville State Gamecocks improved to 11-3 on the season behind a record-setting performance from junior
Zoe Gonzales in a 3-0 sweep over Stetson on day one of the ASUN Crossover Tournament.
The Gamecocks recorded their first ASUN win of the season, 3-0 over Stetson, behind an impressive defensive performance. JSU totaled a season-high 17 blocks, which ranks as the second most in program history and is a school record in three-set matches. Gonzales recorded 11 block assists and two solo blocks for 13 total, a new school record. The previous record was held by Kim Krutsinger, who recorded 11 in 2017.
"I thought our defense carried us tonight. We were really locked in on the scouting report and what we needed to do against each player, and it really showed," said Head Coach
Todd Garvey. "Zoe had an unbelievable blocking performance. We see her potential every day at practice, and she had her breakout game tonight!"
Defense carried JSU early, opening the match on a 6-0 run that included four blocks, all of which involved Gonzales. The Gamecocks continued to build on the lead, leading by eight, 11-3, following a kill from
Kylee Quigley. A kill from senior Lean Kindermann gave the Gamecocks a 21-9 advantage. JSU used a 4-1 run to close out the set, capped with a Quigley block, for the 25-10 set-win.
To begin the second set, JSU once again jumped out to an early advantage, leading 4-0 following a Gonzales and Kindermann block. The lead grew to six in the early goings, 10-4, after a kill from senior
Katie Montgomery. Quigley added another kill lifting JSU to a 19-12 lead late in the second set. Kindermann secured the set two win. 25-15, with a kill. Defense continued to be a dominating factor in the second set. Through two sets the Gamecocks totaled 12 blocks.
JSU took an early 2-0 lead to begin the third set. A quick 3-0 run gave the Hatters a 3-2 lead before an attack error gave the advantage back to JSU, 4-3. A dominant 15-0 run put the Gamecocks ahead, 17-3. The run included eight Stetson attack errors and two Gamecock blocks. With JSU ahead 23-13, Gonzales recorded her 12
th block of the match, setting the school record. On the next point Gonzales added her 13
th block, securing the set-win 25-13, and the 3-0 match sweep. Gonzales' final three blocks tied and lifted the Gamecocks to the school record in a three-set match.
Quigley and Kindermann each had nine kills to lead the Gamecocks. Senior
Lexie Libs added a team-high 29 assists and 11 digs. Junior
Erin Carmichael led the squad with a season-high 15 digs in the sweep. The Gamecocks outhit the Hatters .274 to -.053.
"I also thought we had really good back row play," added Garvey.
"It's awesome to see the transformation of our defense over the past year."
The ASUN Crossover will continue tomorrow as the Gamecocks take on North Florida at 6 p.m. in THE PETE.
