JSU Drops First Match of the Season to Wyoming

Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Jacksonville State Gamecocks suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Wyoming 3-1 in a neutral site contest. Senior Lena Kindermann led the Gamecocks with 13 kills, inching to closer to the 1,000 career kills milestone. 
 
The Cowgirls (3-2) took the first set 29-27 in a thrilling battle down the stretch. JSU (4-1) evened the match up at one set apiece, winning the second set 25-23. Wyoming held off the Gamecocks in the final two sets, winning 25-21 and 25-17 for a 3-1 match win. 
 
Kindermann's 13 kills in the match give her 994 for her career. She is just six away from reaching 1,000. The outside hitter also had three blocks in the contest. Senior setter Lexie Libs added eight kills and 40 assists. Junior Erin Carmichael led the back line with 17 digs while freshman Brooklyn Schiffli added 10. 
 
The Gamecocks recorded five service aces in the match, compared to two for Wyoming. 

JSU held a 22-20 lead late in the first set but a Cowgirl surge gave them a 26-25 advantage. A kill from Sadie Brown knotted the set 26-26 and a kill from Kylee Quigley evened the set 27-27. An ensuing block for the Cowgirls and an attack error by JSU ended the set in a 29-27 win for Wyoming. 
 
The Gamecocks fell behind 15-18 in the second set, before a block from Sadie Brown gave JSU a 21-20 lead. A kill for Wyoming tied the set 21-21 and a service error put JSU up 22-21. An ace for Anna Nelson gave the Gamecocks set point 24-22, and Quigley earned the kill for the set win, 25-23. 
 
JSU held a 14-11 lead midway through the third set before a 10-3 run put Wyoming ahead 21-17. Back-to-back errors by the Cowgirls cut the deficit to two, 21-19. The Gamecocks were unable to re-take take the lead, falling 25-21.
 
Wyoming opened the fourth set on an 8-4 run. A kill from Zoe Gonzales cut the deficit to two, 8-10, and back-to-back Cowgirl attack errors tied the set 10-10. Wyoming would pull away down the stretch, winning 25-17. 
 
The Gamecocks will return to action tomorrow, Sept. 4, against Charleston Southern at 10 a.m. CST. The game will not be streamed on ESPN+. Live stats can be found here.
