JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State soccer team will wrap up a busy final stretch of the 2022 season with its fourth match over a span of eight days with the season finale on Friday against Lipscomb.
The match in the Music City will get underway at 6 p.m. The contest will be streamed on YouTube Live.
The Gamecocks (3-12-2, 1-6-2 ASUN) concluded the home slate last weekend with a split of the two home matches as they blanked Bellarmine last Thursday on senior night and fell to Eastern Kentucky last Sunday. JSU and Jacksonville played a make up contest from late September due to Hurricane Ian impacting the state of Florida in the Sunshine State on Tuesday as both sides played to a scoreless draw.
Jax State and Lipscomb (10-5-2, 7-1-1 ASUN) will be meeting for the third time in the last two seasons at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex after the two sides met in the regular season and in the 2021 ASUN Quarterfinals. LU claimed both of those outings to extend its winning streak against JSU to four consecutive matches. JSU claimed the first two battles with the Bisons when the two programs were in the ASUN the first go-around.
Friday's match marks the final time in red and white for the large senior class. The class has provided leadership on and off the field for the JSU program and will leave their marks in the program record books. JSU will honor Morgan Lerch, Kimberly McPhearson, Isobel Spray, Gabriel Clarke, Briana Eads, Cynthia Bagozzi and Ali Thomas.
Lerch, a fifth-year player, will exit the program as one of the top goalkeepers all-time at JSU with 282 career saves and 12 shutouts. She ranks fourth in career saves and shutouts. McPhearson has played in 18 matches over a two-year span at JSU and has eight shots in 2022. Spray has been one of the anchors in the midfield spot over the last four seasons. She has logged over 3,500 minutes and recorded a goal in the spring season of 2021. Clarke was a mainstay in the lineup until an injury shortened her season. She collected five goals in her career, including a two-goal match in the spring slate of 2021. Eads, a pillar on the JSU backline has started 64 matches and has logged over 5,600 minutes on the pitch, which ranks eighth all-time at JSU. Bagozzi, an offensive threat since her first steps on campus, has 17 career goals and ranks tenth on JSU's career goals list. Thomas, another fifth-year player in the class, has played in 61 matches in her career with three goals and a pair of assists in a Gamecock uniform.
Even though the program will lose a key senior class, the foundation for the future is solid with a core group of returnees that have gained valuable experience this season. Junior Kylie Wells has led the Gamecocks in total shots for third consecutive season with 39 total shots and 22 on-goal looks. Wells shares the team lead in goals with Bagozzi as the pair has three on the season. Wells posted a pair of goals in JSU's 2-2 draw with Central Arkansas. She ranks eighth in the ASUN in total shots and in the top -10 of the league in shots per game at 2.31. Sophomore Laleh Lonteen is the team leader in assists with three on the season along with a goal this season. Junior transfer Vanessa Mejia is one of seven different Gamecocks to have recorded a goal this season.
JSU had seven freshmen on the squad see significant playing time and made immediate impacts to the club. Leading the newcomers in 2022 is goalkeeper Bailey Dean, who has started between the posts since opening day. Dean has collected 67 saves and posted her first career shutout on Tuesday at JU. Birta Birgisdóttir and Camryn Davis have registered a goal this season.
