JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State baseball team will usher in the 2022 season this weekend against Southeastern Conference foe Kentucky in a three-game series on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium.
The Opening Day contest between the Gamecocks and Wildcats is set for 3 p.m. The series will continue on Saturday at 3 p.m. and they two clubs will wrap up the season-opening weekend on Sunday at 1 p.m. Tickets are available online at JSUGamecockSports.com. All JSU students and fans 18 years old and younger are admitted free to all JSU baseball games.
UK becomes the fourth Southeastern Conference team that Jax State has ushered in a new season against. The Gamecocks started the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season against Missouri. JSU started 2011 season at Auburn and faced Alabama on Opening Day of 2004 in Jacksonville. This weekend's series marks the second time that JSU and UK have played on the baseball diamond. The Gamecocks downed UK, 3-2, during the 1974 season. Jax State, no stranger to facing SEC competition, has played 125 games previously against one of the 14 SEC Schools. Last season, JSU dropped a home-and-set with Alabama and a road test at Mississippi State. The 2022 schedule will again be challenging as the Gamecocks will have a two-game set with both Auburn and Alabama.
JSU will have a veteran team that still has eight players on the roster that were on the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference title and NCAA Regional finalist club. Highlighting the returning players is All-Ohio Valley Conference performer Alex Carignan. Carignan shared time at catcher with Webb as he caught 15 games and made the transition to first base for 16 starts. He also was JSU's designated hitter in six games. The Murfreesboro, Tennessee multi-position player had 13 multiple hit OVC games and three games with multiple RBI. He ended the 2021 season with 10 consecutive OVC games with a hit and reached bases in 14 straight conference games. Also returning for another season on the diamond will be shortstop Isaac Alexander, outfielder Carson Crowe, second baseman Cole Frederick and first baseman Alex Strachan.
The Gamecocks will also have new faces in the lineup and in the pitching staff. Freshman infielder Brennen Norton was a highly decorated signee out of Cullman, Alabama, while AJ Causey, a dual player, will see time on the infield and has the capabilities to figure into JSU's late-game situations on the mound.
Sophomore Reid Fagerstrom has earned the pitching nod on Opening Day, while freshman Tanner Jones and sophomore Camden Lovrich will start on Saturday and Sunday respectively. The Gamecocks will rely on veteran arms out of the bullpen.
For the third consecutive season, all JSU home games will be streamed on ESPN+. The first two games of the UK series will be carried on the Gamecock Sports Network with Mike Parris describing all the action.
