Baseball Falls to Troy; Weekend Series Altered For Weather

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State baseball team dropped a 14-6 decision to Troy on Wednesday afternoon on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium.

The Trojans used a 10-run third inning to take control of the contest early and fended off the Gamecocks' rally with six runs over the final four innings. The midweek loss snaps JSU's four-game winning streak and it was the second setback to Troy dating back to last season.

Jax State will continue the seven-game homestand this weekend against another in-state foe, South Alabama. The weekend series has been altered due to the chilly forecast for Saturday in the Jacksonville area. The Gamecocks and Jaguars will play a doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m. and wrap up the weekend series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Tickets are available online at JSUGamecockSports.com. All JSU students and fans 18 years old and younger are admitted free.

The Trojans' big inning was engineered by eight hits, including four doubles. Troy had four players have multiple hits and two players with three RBI in the contest.

Jax State got its first run of the contest with a solo home run by freshman Brennen Norton. The blast that traveled 383 feet over the left field fence in the fifth inning. It was Norton's first home run as a Gamecock. The Cullman, Alabama third baseman has hit safely in nine of the 11 games and pushed a hitting streak to four consecutive games.

The Gamecocks posted three runs in the sixth on an RBI single from senior Cole Frederick and two runs via wild pitches. Brooks Bryan started the frame with a double to join Frederick's RBI single. Junior Lane Domino tallied his first RBI as a Gamecock with one of the two runs in the JSU seventh inning. The Fulton, Miss. native scored on Troy's third wild pitch in two innings.
Frederick finished the contest with a pair of hits in the sixth and seventh.
