JACKSONVILLE – UAB cooled off a sizzling Jacksonville State offense in a 7-1 win on Tuesday night at Rudy Abbott Field at
Jim Case Stadium.
The Gamecocks, who entered the contest having swept North Alabama to crawl back into a tie for first place in the ASUN West Division standings with three weekends left in the regular season and averaging over 12 hits per game over a span of the last seven games, were limited to six hits on the night, led by senior
Cole Frederick's pair of hits in his first two plate appearances. UAB (26-17) notched their first win over the Gamecocks since the 2015 season, snapping an eight-game skid to JSU.
UAB manufactured a run in the first and another single run in the third before Jax State answered with its run in the third inning. The Tuesday tussle was a one-run contest until the Blazers broke it open with a five-run inning after capitalizing on a pair of JSU fielding miscues. UAB's six pitchers kept JSU off balanced throughout the game and turned a timely double play to get out of a jam in JSU's run-scoring third inning. Both teams combined for six double plays with the Gamecocks recording a season-high four in the setback.
Senior
Alex Carignan produced JSU's RBI in the third, driving in
Cole Frederick, who reached on a single back up the middle. Carignan pushed his on-base streak to seven games with his base hit. Junior
T.J. Reeves reached on a UAB error to extend his on-base streak to 15 games which matches a streak of 15 games earlier in the season. Sophomore
Mason Maners had his streak of 21 games reaching base snapped on Tuesday.
The Gamecocks relied on its bullpen for the midweek outing, using five pitchers on the night with
Trey Fortner tossing the first two innings.
Dylan Hathcock, who was saddled with the loss, pitched an inning, followed by
Cole Turner,
Trevor Andrews and
Reese Morrison.
JSU will travel to the Bluegrass State for a key three-game weekend series against Eastern Kentucky in Richmond beginning on Friday. The opening game of the series is set for 5 p.m. followed by a 5 p.m. Saturday contest. The series wraps up on Sunday at 12 p.m. All three games will be carried on the Gamecock Sports Network, while the Saturday and Sunday games will be streamed on ESPN+.
