EL PASO, Texas – Jacksonville State recorded its first Conference USA win after making a first half goal stand up over the University of Texas at El Paso, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at University Field on the UTEP campus.
The Gamecocks have put together three consecutive unbeaten matches after back-to-back draws against Louisiana Tech and Western Kentucky. The win also was the first road win for the6-5-2 Gamecocks and moved the overall mark to 6-5-2 and improved to 1-1-2.
The game-winning goal came in the 33rd minute after
Naroa Domenech found the back of the net after a service from
Laleh Lonteen. Her goal matched Lonteen for the team lead in total goals with Lonteen. Playing in her home state, Lonteen picked up her fifth assist of the season.
"It was a great goal and absorbed the pressure, which was more than we would have liked. Ultimately, it was great to get our first conference win, but we would have loved a second goal. We will learn from today and get ready for next week," said head coach Sean Fraser.
Jax State weathered a second half charge by the Miners with seven of their 11 shots coming in the second half. The Gamecocks survived a penalty kick by UTEP in the final half as
Bailey Dean fended off the PK. The shutout was her fifth of the season. Dean finished the day with three saves.
The posted six shots in the opening 45 minutes and were credited with a pair of shots in the second half. Domenech led the offensive charge with a two looks at goal, including the game winner.
Jax State will return home next Sunday, October 8 against CUSA leader New Mexico State. Kick off is set for 1 p.m. at the Jax State Soccer Complex. Admission is free to all home matches.
