SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Jax State softball team put together one of its most dominant performances in team history, defeating the Missouri State Bears 25-2 on Saturday afternoon at Killian Stadium to set a new record for most runs scored in a single game by the Gamecocks.
Additionally, the performance was the most runs scored by a Conference USA team against another league opponent all-time as well. The Gamecocks are now the only team in the conference to score over 20 runs in any game this season, with this performance marking the second straight season that Jax State has surpassed the 20-run mark in a game.
Senior catcher
Makalyn Kyser found herself into the record books as well, notching eight RBIs against Missouri State which is the second-most by a Jax State player in team history, trailing Megan McDonald's 10-RBI performance against St. Bonaventure on March 12, 2004.
As a unit, the Gamecocks tallied 22 hits, with 12 different batters picking up at least one base knock each. Defensively, Jax State was just as dominant, as it allowed just three hits from the Bears all game long.
Kyser opened up the contest without hesitation, as she launched a two-out grand slam over the wall in right-center to put the Gamecocks on the board first, and was followed by a solo homer by
Ashley Phillips to make it a 5-0 game in the opening frame.
After surrendering two runs to the Bears in the bottom half of the first, it would be the last scores for Missouri State, as the Gamecocks posted another five runs in the top of the third, highlighted by another home run by Kyser, this time being a three-run shot to right-center to extend the lead to 9-2.
Jax State continued to pile on to the lead in the fourth, tallying eight runs in the frame after the first six straight Gamecock batters were able to reach base. In the inning,
Kailey Martin opened up with a solo home run, which was Jax State's fifth and final round-tripper of the day.
Entering the fifth with a 19-2 lead, the Gamecocks weren't done yet as they poured in six more runs to finally bring the scoring total to 25 runs.
Kyser and Martin both went 3-for-3 at the plate, combining for 10 RBIs between the pair, including three home runs as well.
Emma Elrod,
Morgan Nowakowski,
Aria Davis,
Ashley Phillips and
Jaci Underwood each managed to pick up two hits as well throughout the contest.
In the circle,
Jaliyah Holmes held it down defensively for Jax State as the senior pitcher allowed just two runs off three hits in a complete game performance. Holmes tallied five strikeouts as well, on her way to her 12
th win of the year.
The Gamecocks will look to complete the series sweep on Sunday afternoon, facing off against Missouri State at 11 a.m.
