Gamecock Softball Finishes Off Series Sweep of Morehead State

FINAL STATS

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State softball team put the finishing touches on its series sweep of Morehead State on Sunday with a 7-3 win in Ohio Valley Conference play at University Field.

The Gamecocks (19-6, 6-0 OVC) got a game-tying two-run home run from junior Kristin Graham in the third and one that put them ahead of the Eagles (9-16, 3-3 OVC) for good in the fourth from junior Tess Echols and never looked back. The win was the 11th in a row for JSU and extends its second-best start in OVC play behind the 2008 team's 12-0 start.

Freshman Tiffany Harbin (12-4) earned her eighth win in JSU's last 10 games after limiting the Eagles to three runs on three hits in seven innings, her eighth complete game of the season. The Hazel Green, Ala., native struck out seven on Sunday to wrap up a weekend that saw her claim two wins and a save while striking out 20 batters in 14.1 innings of work.

Junior Abbey Stepp recorded a pair of hits and a walk and drove in a run to cap an impressive week for JSU. The Versailles, Ky., native went 7-for-8 in the series sweep with a double, home run, three walks and five RBI.

The Eagles got things going in the top of the second, when Kayla Brill belted a two-run homer to left center. The homer was MSU's first hit of the day and gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead until Graham tied it in the third.

Graham's seventh home run of the year followed a one-out single by freshman Hayden Crawford and bounced off the top of the scoreboard beyond the left field wall. The Warner Robins, Ga., native's seventh round tripper of the season tied the game at 2-2 and set up Echols' go-ahead shot in the fourth.

Following a one-out walk from sophomore Krystal Ruth, Echols went the other way with MSU pitcher Kelcey McMurray's first pitch and put JSU up for good.

The Gamecocks added to the lead with three in the fifth, a frame highlighted by an RBI single from Stepp and a run-scoring double off the bat of Ruth, to take a commanding 7-2 lead.

The Eagles got one back in the seventh on Brill's second homer, a leadoff shot that was just the third hit of the day for MSU. Brill's 2-for-3, three-RBI day was all Morehead State could muster against Hardin.

McMurray (3-3) suffered the loss in the circle after surrendering seven runs, five earned, on eight hits in five innings of work. She walked five and didn't record a strikeout in the losing effort.

The Gamecocks will be on the road on Tuesday for a 2 p.m. OVC doubleheader at Tennessee State in Nashville and will then take on Middle Tennessee in a non-conference twinbill at 2 p.m. on Wednesday in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
