BIRMINGHAM – Patrick Palmeiro and Tyler Mims each had two hits and drove in two runs to lead UAB to a 5-4 win over Jacksonville State at Young Memorial Field on Wednesday afternoon in college baseball.
Dylan Munger (2-1) scattered four hits in three innings of relief to earn the win for the Blazers, while Ryan Nance pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his third save. JSU's
Casey Antley got stuck with the loss after giving up all five runs in just 2 1/3 innings on the mound.
Jax State took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after
Scott Underwood was hit by a pitch and then scored when
Andrew Bishop tripled to right center to give the Gamecocks the early lead.
Sam Eberle hit his second home run of the season in the top of the third inning to extend JSU's lead to 2-0, but the Blazers took the lead in the home half of the third inning.
UAB plated five runs on five hits, including two-RBI doubles by Palmeiro and Mims, while Jeff Schalk drove in another run as the Blazers took a 5-2 lead.
Jax State scored two runs in the sixth inning on a two-run home run by
Michael Bishop to cut the lead to 5-4. It was the second home run of the season for Bishop, who finished the game with a pair of hits.
Erik Underwood also had two hits for Jax State
Jacksonville State returns to action this weekend with a three-game series against Kennesaw State. Friday's game is set for 3 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday's games will both begin at 1 p.m. at Rudy Abbott Field.
