Underwood, Stout Lift JSU Past Long Island, 5-4

Box Score

LAKELAND, Fla. – Scott Underwood's three-run double in the seventh, coupled with a stellar pitching performance by Travis Stout, lifted Jacksonville State to a 5-4 win over Long Island on Saturday at Henley Park.

The win snapped a six-game losing skid for the Gamecocks (3-13) and they notched their first win in the Matt Russ Central Florida games.  After playing a 19-inning affair on Friday, the Blackbirds of LIU fell to 8-9 on the year.

After Jax State loaded the bases in the seventh, Underwood laced a bases-clearing doubles off of LIU's Kyle Pomeroy with two outs to give JSU its first lead of the contest after trailing 4-2 through the first six frames.  Eric Underwood started the rally with a lead off single to right.  Andrew Bishop reached base via a hit by pitch to put the tying runs on the base paths.  Pomeroy loaded the bases after a Coty Blanchard walk prior to Underwood's key hit.

JSU broke through with a spark at the plate after stranding 13 prior to Underwood driving in his three RBIs.  Underwood, a senior from Reno, Nev., finished the contest 2-for-4 at the plate.  Through the first three games in Florida, Underwood has paced the Gamecocks at the dish, going 4-for-8.

Sophomore Casey Antley drew the start on the mound for JSU and tossed the first 4.2 innings.  After pitching out of trouble in the first and second, allowing single LIU runs, the Holtville, Ala.-left hander settled in and finished with five strikeouts.

Antley gave way to Stout and after giving up a single that came right back to him off his leg, the Smyrna, Ga.-product set down the next ten Blackbirds.  Stout recorded a pair of strikeouts in his 3.1 innings pitched.  Senior closer Todd Hornsby set LIU down in order in the ninth for his first save of the season.

Stout moved to 1-1 on the season, while LIU's Pomeroy was saddled with the loss.

JSU evened the score at 2-2 in the second after a Blanchard double to right field to plate Cal Lambert and Bishop.  Lambert started the frame with his first career triple, while Bishop reached on a fielder's choice.

LIU's re-gained the lead on Mike Garcia's two-run home run in the top half of the third.  Garcia paced the Balckbirds' line up with three hits.

The Gamecocks return to action on Sunday as they face Nebraska-Omaha in a 3 p.m. CST contest.  The game will be carried on the Gamecock Sports Network with air time set for 2:45 p.m.
