MOREHEAD, Ky. –
Ben Waldrip had four hits and drove in three runs as Jacksonville State claimed a 10-4 win over Morehead State as the Gamecocks won their second straight Ohio Valley Conference series on Sunday.
Hunter Rivers (1-3) had seven strikeouts and scattered six hits in 5 2/3 innings on the mound to earn his first win of the season. Blake Smith gave up six runs and eight hits to suffer the loss for the Eagles.
The Gamecocks (10-17, 4-2 OVC) had a season-high 17 hits and also scored a season-high 10 runs vs the Eagles, led by Waldrip's four hits, while
Coty Blanchard and
Kyle Bluestein each had three hits.
Cal Lambert and
Kyle Stone each added a pair of hits for the Gamecocks.
Morehead State took a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Gamecocks in the second after Stone knocked in a pair of runs with a single up the middle to give JSU a 2-1 lead.
Duran Elmore hit a solo home run for Morehead State to tie the game at 2-2 in the home half of the second, before Jax State added two runs in the third inning on an infield grounder and
Erik Underwood had a RBI single to give the Gamecocks a 4-2 lead.
Luke Bainer scored on a ground ball for Morehead to cut the lead to 4-3 in the third inning, but the Gamecocks added two more runs in the fifth inning on a RBI single by Waldrip, who later scored on an error by the Eagles as JSU built a 6-3 lead.
Waldrip drove in his second run of the day in the seventh inning, as Bluestein and Lambert each also drove in a run to extend the Gamecocks lead to 9-3. Blanchard scored on a RBI single by Waldrip in the eighth inning to give JSU a 10-3 lead, before Taylor Pickens hit a solo home run in the ninth inning for the final margin.
Bluestein also extended his hitting streak to a team-high 10 games, while Eberle now has a season-long hitting streak of seven games.
Jacksonville State returns to action on Tuesday when the Gamecocks travel to face Auburn. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Plainsman Park and the game can be heard on the JSU Sports Network.
