EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. –
Todd Hornsby picked up his 31st career save to tie the Ohio Valley Conference record as Jacksonville State claimed a 4-3 win over SIU Edwardsville on Sunday afternoon.
Hornsby, a native of Clay-Chalkville, picked up his 11th save of the season after scattering three hits over the final 3 1/3 innings in relief to tie Eastern Kentucky's Joe Witten (1995-98) with 31 career saves.
JSU's
Hunter Rivers (4-3) picked up the win after allowing just five hits and recording four strikeouts for the Gamecocks. SIUE's Joshh Hoguet (2-6) suffered the loss after giving up seven hits and three runs.
Jax State took an early 1-0 lead after
Kyle Stone scored on a
Kyle Bluestein sacrifice fly in the third inning, but the Cougars tied the game in the fourth inning on a RBI single by Zach Hawkins to make the score 1-1.
The Gamecocks took the lead for good in the fifth inning after
Kyle Bluestein reached on an infield grounder and stole second.
Erik Underwood followed with a RBI single and scored when
Cal Lambert doubled to right center to give JSU a 3-1 lead.
Jax State extended the lead to 4-1 in the sixth inning after
Scott Underwood led off with a triple and scored when
Andrew Bishop doubled to left field.
The Cougars got a run in the sixth inning on a RBI single by Hawkins and then scored in the ninth inning on a RBI double by Travis Becherer for the final margin.
Erik Underwood,
Scott Underwood and
Adam Miller each had a pair of hits to lead the Gamecocks. Hawkins and Devin Caldwell each had two hits to lead the Cougars.
Jacksonville State returns to action on Tuesday as the Gamecocks travel to face Auburn. Game time is set for 6 p.m. from Plainsman Park.
