Gamecocks Outlast Troy in 16 Inning Marathon, 8-7

TROY, Ala. – Normally the reigning Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week who hit the game-winning home run in the 16th inning to give Jacksonville State an 8-7 win over Troy, but it was two guys that have not pitched all season that led JSU to win.

Freshman Nic Gaddis, usually receiving the pitches from the pitching staff, pitched four scoreless innings to keep extending the game until Josh Bobo's two-out solo home run over Troy's 27-foot wall in right field to give JSU the lead.  Gaddis, from Trenton, Georgia, recorded his first win of the year after posting four strikeouts in the outing.  Head coach Jim Case went to senior Ty Pierce closed out the contest for his first save of his career.  Pierce, the older brother of sophomore right hander Jack Pierce, had a strikeout.

The win avenged the Trojans' 10-0 win over Jax State in March at Rudy Abbott Field.  JSU improved to 22-10 overall and will turn its attention to its OVC road series at Tennessee Tech that gets started on Friday, April 15 in Cookeville, Tennessee.  The loss snapped Troy's six-game losing streak.

Bobo, who had three home runs last Saturday in the 22-7 win over Murray State, recorded his seventh home run of the season on his fourth hit of the contest.  The Attalla, Alabama native had an RBI in regulation to help the Gamecocks build a 6-1 lead through the first seven innings.

JSU started strong with two runs in the first inning to give starter Derrick Adams a cushion heading out to face the Trojans.  Adams was solid in his three innings of work as he struck out four and allowed just three hits.  Case wanted to get a lot of pitchers some work during the contest.  Joe McGuire, Colton Pate, Grant Chandler all worked an inning.  The trio followed Adams' lead, holding Troy to just one run through the first six inning.  That run was a solo home run by Joey Denison in the fourth.
JSU's nine pitchers combined for 19 strikeouts and just three walks.  Troy's six pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts and gave up five free passes.  Jax State finished with 17 hits, while Troy collected 18 hits.

Troy started its rally in the seventh as JSU's first two walks of the night by Michael McCreless ignited a four-run seventh.  The Trojans strung together four consecutive hits to get within a run.  Troy would equalize in the eighth to send it to extra frames.

JSU manufactured a run in the 11th as Taylor Hawthorne lifted a fly ball to left field to score Paschal Petrongolo, who led off the inning with a single.  The Trojans battled back with an unearned run off of Justin Hoyt.

Senior Elliot McCummings, playing in the designated hitter spot, turned in a 3-for-4 night with a pair of doubles.  Hawthorne registered three RBI on a pair of hits.  Clayton Daniel, Gavin Golsan and Petrongolo all had multiple hits in the win.

All three games this weekend at TTU will be available on the Gamecock Sports Network and streamed live on the OVC Digital Network.  Friday's series opener is set for 6 p.m.
