MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Jacksonville State baseball team dropped a 15-14 decision and the series to Morehead State as the Eagles posted the win in walk-off fashion on Saturday evening at Allen Field on the MSU campus.
The loss dropped the Gamecocks to 29-21 on the season and 17-9 in Ohio Valley Conference play along with falling into a second place tie with Austin Peay after it won its second straight over SIU Edwardsville on Saturday. The Govs will finish their conference slate on Sunday against the Cougars, while Jax State will have Sunday's third-and-final game of the series with MSU and close out the regular season next weekend against UT Martin at Rudy Abbott Field.
The Eagles completed the come-from-behind win in the ninth without the ball leaving the infield. MSU had a one-out walk that eventually scored the game-winning run. Trevor Snyder drew the walk by
Justin Hoyt and then moved to second and third on a wild pitch and passed ball. Snyder scored on a slow rolling ball that JSU tried to complete a twin killing, but Reid Leonard beat out the throw.
MSU erased an 8-0 early deficit as it chipped away at the Jax State lead with seven runs in the final three plate appearances, including three runs in the seventh and three in the eighth to draw even with JSU at 14-all.
For the second consecutive day, it was the bottom portion of the Eagles' lineup that caused JSU fits in the lengthy contest. MSU's Niko Hulsizer and Hunter Fann combined to go 7-for-10 on the day. Hulsizer went 4-for-5 on the day and drove in four runs. Fain was 3-for-3 with a pair of home runs. The duo combined for half of MSU's 14 hits off of JSU pitching.
Jax State started strong with eight runs in the first two plate appearances, including a five-run first inning. The frame was highlighted by sophomore
Taylor Hawthorne's three-run home run off of MSU starter Aaron Leasher. It was Hawthorne's second home run of the weekend. JSU took advantage of Leasher's inability to find the strike zone as he lasted just 3.1 innings and was touched for 10 runs on just six hits. He gave up four free passes to the Gamecocks.
After MSU put its first two runs on the board off of JSU's
Joe McGuire in the second, JSU extended the lead in the fourth with a pair of runs. Sophomore Daniel Clayton was credited with an RBI after a sacrifice fly to center.
MSU made things tighter in the fifth with four runs with the big blow in the frame off the bat of Fain with his first home run.
The Gamecocks matched MSU with a four spot in the sixth Daniel added another RBI with a single to start the scoring, while
Tyler Gamble collected a pair of RBI with a single. Gamble, who had three hits on Friday night, add a trio of hits on Saturday and three RBI to lead JSU at the plate. That would end the scoring for JSU as MSU's Patrick McGuff and Cable Wright finished off the game and allowed just four hits and combined to strike out seven.
Sunday's game will be available on the Gamecock Sports Network.
