JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State baseball team dropped the final game of the weekend series with South Alabama as the Jaguars pulled out a 4-3 decision in 11 innings on Sunday afternoon at Rudy Abbott Field at
Jim Case Stadium.
USA improved to 11-3 overall after taking a doubleheader on Friday over the Gamecocks. After taking Saturday off with the frigid temperatures on Saturday, the Jaguars completed the sweep with its extra inning win to drop Jax State to 4-10 on the season. After seven games on its home turf, JSU will travel to UAB on Tuesday for its lone midweek action before opening up ASUN competition next weekend at Lipscomb in Nashville, Tenn. First pitch from Young Memorial Field on the UAB campus is set for 4 p.m.
A leadoff hit-by-pitch to start the visitor's half of the 11th inning was manufactured into the game-winning run for USA. Diego Altamirano was plunked by JSU's
AJ Causey to start the final frame and was sacrificed over to second base before Will Turner delivered the RBI single. USA had three of its runs score that reached via hit-by-pitch or walk in the contest.
USA grabbed the early lead with a run in the first inning off of Gamecock starter
Camden Lovrich. Lovrich was touched for eight hits but battled to only allow a pair of runs in five complete innings.
All three of JSU's runs came in the third inning after senior
Isaac Alexander started the inning with a double and scored on a two-out RBI from junior
T.J. Reeves. Reeves pushed his team-best RBI count to 12 with a ground out to the right side of the infield. The Jaguars left the door open for JSU with a fielding miscue off the bat of
Carson Crowe. Senior
Alex Carignan took advantage of the opportunity with his first home run of the season to give JSU its first lead of the day.
USA answered in the fourth inning with an RBI double by Joseph Sullivan that plated Santi Montiel from first, who reached on a one-out hit-by-pitch. The Jaguars equalized in the seventh with an RBI single from Mile Simington, scoring Erick Orbeta, who walked to start the frame.
Sophomore
Jake Peppers was touched for the run in his three innings of work and kept USA off the scoreboard. Freshman
AJ Causey tossed the final three innings and collected five strikeouts in suffering the loss.
USA starter JoJo Booker scattered four JSU hits over the first six innings of work before handing it over to the Jags bullpen. Eric Lin, who picked up the win, surrendered one hit over the final 3.2 innings and striking out four in the decision.
Outside of the Alexander double and Carignan home run in the third, JSU had double from
Cole Frederick and singles from Reeves and freshman
Brennen Norton.
