Gamecock Baseball Claims ASUN Opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Jacksonville State played in its first ASUN game since the 2003 season as it opened the conference slate with a 10-1 win over Lipscomb on Friday afternoon at Ken Dugan Field.

The Gamecocks scored 10 unanswered runs after the Bisons took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Following that frame, JSU junior pitcher Isaiah Magwood was magnificent in his second start of the season. He turned in five scoreless frames and held Lipscomb to just two hits over the final five inning of his outing. The Hazel Green, Alabama right hander collected seven strikeouts. He notched his second win of the season.

JSU answered the Bisons run in the first inning as it strung together four hits in the second inning to plate five runs and give Magwood a sizable cushion to work with. Sophomore Mason Maners and senior Isaac Alexander had back-to-back RBI singles before junior T.J. Reeves delivered a two-run double. Senior Cole Frederick scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch. Frederick helped in expanding the lead with a solo home run in the eighth. Maners joined freshman Brennen Norton with a three-hit afternoon. Maners, from Vestavia Hills, Alabama was solid defensively in left field and finished with three RBI. Reeves turned in his fifth multi-hit contest with a pair of doubles.

Norton had an RBI in the JSU third with a ground out to extend the lead to 6-1. Tennessee native Alex Carignan added a run on the JSU side of the scoreboard with a double in the seventh.
The Gamecocks' bullpen followed Magwood's lead over the final three frames. Sophomore Reid Fagerstrom turned in two clean innings with a pair of strikeouts, while Trevor Andrews retired LU in order in the ninth.

The 10 runs scored by the Gamecocks was the second-highest run production this season and the five-run second inning was the second inning this season that JSU has scored five or more runs in an inning.

The series continues on Saturday afternoon on the Lipscomb campus. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. The game will be streamed on YouTube and carried on the Gamecock Sports Network with Mike Parris calling all the action.
