Fifth Inning Rally Lifts Jax State to Series-Clinching Win

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A six-run fifth and stout a stout bullpen performance lifted Jacksonville State to a series-clinching , 6-4, win over Lipscomb on Saturday afternoon at Joe Dugan Field.

The Gamecocks (6-10, 2-0 ASUN) turned in their fifth come-from-behind win of the season and the second on the weekend as the Bisons (10-9, 0-2 ASUN) jumped out to a 3-0 lead through four innings. JSU batted around in the lengthy fifth inning as it took advantage of LU's ability to find the strike zone with four walks issued in the inning, while the inning was highlighted by a two-run single back up the middle by junior T.J. Reeves and a two-run double from senior Alex Strachan.

The first of the three hits in the inning was an RBI single by senior Isaac Alexander. Sophomore Kody Putnam recorded an RBI with a sacrifice fly. The Gamecocks saw three different LU arms in the inning.

For the second consecutive day, LU put up runs in its first plate appearance as it pushed two runs across on three hits off of JSU starter Tanner Jones. Jones pitched four compete innings, allowing four runs on six hits. The Gamecocks' bullpen stymied LU's offense over the final five innings with putting up zeros the rest of the way. Sophomore Jake Peppers finished the fifth and got one out in the sixth.

After a leadoff single to start the sixth off of Peppers, JSU called on senior Dylan Hathcock to finish the inning. Hathcock, who picked up his first win of the season, went 1.2 innings and started the five batters he faced. Freshman AJ Causey finished the contest for his second save of the game. Hathcock and Causey combined for four strikeouts in relief. The duo also retired the last 12 Bisons after the leadoff single in the sixth by Ethan Stamps.

The Jax State offense put together a nine-hit day, led by senior Cole Frederick's three-hit day and reach base four times in the contest. Frederick now has five multi-hit games on the season. Reeves had a pair of hits and reached base three times to give him six multi-hit games and with his two RBI, he has four games this season with multiple RBI. Freshman Brennen Norton continued to have a solid opening weekend of ASUN action with another two-hit day. For the first two games of the weekend, Frederick, Reeves and Norton have 13-of-the-21 Gamecock hits.

With the first ASUN series clinched, JSU will be looking to complete the conference sweep on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed on YouTube and carried on the Gamecock Sports Network.
