Jax State Comes From Behind To Sweep North Alabama

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State turned in its eighth come-from-behind win of the season en route to it second consecutive sweep to begin ASUN play with a 6-5 Sunday win over North Alabama on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium.

The Gamecocks (11-11, 6-0) and Kennesaw State are the two undefeated ASUN teams after two weekends of league activity. JSU swept Lipscomb in Nashville last weekend and claimed all three from the Lions. The Owls have swept Jacksonville on the road and turned in three wins over North Florida in Kennesaw, Georgia. UNA fell to 6-16 overall and 1-5 in the ASUN. The Gamecocks and Lions will meet in Florence, Alabama on April 29-May 1.

JSU completed the comeback in the seventh inning with a game-tying RBI from sophomore Kody Putnam, followed by the eventual game-winning run on a wild pitch from Luke Harper, sending T.J. Reeves across the dish. Reeves was issued a walk earlier in the inning after senior Cole Frederick beat out an infield single to start the inning. Freshman AJ Causey earned his first win as a Gamecock after 3.0 innings of work and not giving up a run. Causey finished the weekend with his third save of the season in Friday's 11-8 Jax State win and the winning decision on Sunday.

The Lions, who put the first run on the scoreboard in the first inning, also erased a deficit after JSU scored a pair of runs in the first inning. Junior Carson Crowe delivered an RBI single to right for the first run, while senior Alex Strachan lifted a sacrifice fly in the frame for the RBI.

UNA put together a four-run third inning off of JSU starter Camden Lovrich. The Lions strung together four hits including a two-run home run by Jonathan Lane. UNA starter Jacob James kept JSU's offense quiet for two innings before the Gamecocks started chipping away at the three-run deficit. JSU was given the opportunity to stay in the contest with the three innings of work from redshirt junior Trey Fortner. Fortner, who had five innings of scoreless work on Tuesday against Samford, held UNA until the Gamecocks started the comeback. Fortner did not allow a UNA hit and fanned a pair of Lions.

Jax State cut into the deficit in the fourth with senior Isaac Alexander's RBI single, scoring Mason Maners from second base. Putnam had one of his three hits in the fourth inning. The Gamecocks trimmed the lead to 5-4 in the sixth on Putnam's infield single.

Putnam, from Evansville, Indiana, paced the JSU lineup with his three hits, while Frederick, Crowe Alex Carignan and Alexander all had a pair of hits.

After putting together a 5-1 mark during spring break on the JSU campus, the Gamecocks will have only one midweek outing this week as they travel to Auburn on Tuesday night. First pitch against the Tigers is set for 6 p.m. The game will be carried on the SEC Network + and carried on the Gamecock Sports Network.

Following the midweek test on the plains, the Gamecocks return home for another ASUN weekend series. The Colonels of Eastern Kentucky will visit Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium beginning on Friday, April 1. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. For Sunday's series finale on April 3, the Atlanta Braves' mascot Blooper will be in attendance along with Matthew Kaminski, the Braves organist at Truist Park. Tickets for the EKU series are available online at JSUGamecockSports.com. All JSU students and fans 18 years old and younger are admitted free.
