FLORENCE –Jacksonville State senior shortstop
Isaac Alexander finished with four hits and delivered three RBI to lead the Gamecocks to a weekend sweep of North Alabama with a 9-3 Sunday win on Mike Lane Field.
Alexander, playing just across the Tennessee River from his hometown of Muscle Shoals, was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle against the Lions in the series finale. He broke up a 1-1 deadlock in the fourth inning with a two-run home run and started a six-run sixth inning for JSU with an RBI single. Alexander finished the day with a double to start the seventh inning. He beat out of an infield single in his last at bat in the ninth.
Alexander was one of four Gamecocks to have multiple hits in five consecutive games dating back to the Auburn game last Tuesday. Senior
Cole Frederick joined his middle infield cohort with a three-hit day, including a two-run single in the big Jax State frame. Senior
Alex Carignan put JSU on the scoreboard with an RBI single in the first and added two runs in the sixth frame. Freshman
Brennen Norton had a pair of hits, including a triple in the sixth inning. Sophomore
Mason Maners, junior
Carson Crowe tallied RBI in the 11-batter inning with walks, while freshman
AJ Causey had an RBI single.
With his walk in the sixth, Maners extended his on-base streak to 21 consecutive games. Causey, who started as the designated hitter in the contest, also picked up the win on the mound with 3.2 innings of work and allowed just two hits and a run in relief.
Sophomore
Jake Peppers started the Sunday affair with 3.2 innings and four strikeouts. Senior
Dylan Hathcock pitched an inning, while freshman
Tanner Jones recorded the final two outs of the game.
With the win on Sunday, the Gamecocks reached the .500 mark at 21-21 overall and with Central Arkansas dropping a series at Lipscomb, JSU moved into a share of first place in the ASUN West Division standings with Eastern Kentucky. Next weekend's trip to Richmond, Kentucky for Jax State will be for the top spot in the division with three weekends left in the regular season. The Colonels won a road series at Bellarmine to move to 14-7, while JSU's sweep of UNA put it with an identical conference mark.
Before the crucial series with EKU, the Gamecocks will host in-state foe UAB on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. on Rudy Abbott Field at
Jim Case Stadium. Tickets are available online at JSUGamecockSports.com. All JSU students and fans 18 years old and younger get in free. The game with the Blazers will be streamed on ESPN+ and carried on the Gamecock Sports Network.
