
JSU Begins ASUN Baseball Championship On Tuesday

FORT MEYERS, Fla. – After missing the postseason last year, the Jacksonville State baseball team will begin its run for an ASUN Baseball title on Tuesday with the opening day of pool play in the 2022 ASUN Baseball Championship, hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University.
The Gamecocks (26-27) secured a berth in the eight-team field last Saturday by completing a sweep of Bellarmine. JSU finished 19-11 in its first year back in the ASUN since 2003, will face Jacksonville on Tuesday evening at Swanson Stadium on the FGCU campus. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST. The Gamecocks will have a quick turnaround with an 11 a.m. match up with Eastern Kentucky at JetBlue Park, the Spring Training home of the Boston Red Sox. That facility is being used as one of the pool play sites. JSU will conclude pool activity on Wednesday against North Florida at 11 a.m. EST. The winner of the Pool B will advance to the semifinal round on Friday. If the Pool B winner has already been decided after Wednesday's game, the third game will not be played.
JSU enters the postseason playing well by winning its last five ASUN West Division games with a pair of wins over Central Arkansas and the sweep of BU. In the five games to earn a spot in the field, JSU is hitting .314 as a team with 39 runs scored. Over that span, the Gamecocks have collected 25 extra base hits, including 12 doubles and 11 home runs. The pitching staff is has limited the opposition with an earned run average of 2.20 and tallied 47 strikeouts and just 19 walks over the last 45.0 innings.
The Dolphins begin the week at 25-27 overall and 13-16 in the ASUN East Division. JU earned one of the tournament bids by virtue of its RPI. Tuesday's postseason action with JU will be the first meeting between the two programs since the 2019 season. The Gamecocks and Dolphins played a home-and-home three game series for the 2018 and 2019 season.
Senior Cole Frederick has raised his average over the .300 mark over the past 16 games. He enters the JU game riding a 16-game hitting streak. In those 16 games, the Tuscaloosa, Alabama native is hitting .420 with 29 hits in 69 at bats along with five double and five home runs. Frederick has delivered 18 RBI and scored 16 runs during the streak. Sophomore Mason Maners, JSU's leadoff man owns a team-best .353 batting average after the regular season with 31 RBI. Maners reached base in 28-of-the-30 ASUN games this season. Junior T.J. Reeves and freshman Brennen Norton have bolstered the Jax State lineup with both hitting over .300.
The Gamecocks' pitching staff is set up for the haul to win the ASUN crown. The Gamecocks will start senior Dylan Hathcock in Tuesday's game. Hathcock will be making his second start of the season but is no stranger to a starter's role in the postseason. He helped JSU claim the 2019 OVC Championship with a start in the tournament and gained a start in the 2019 NCAA Oxford Regional.
