VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. – The Jacksonville State softball team cruised to a 9-4 win over Alabama A&M on Saturday morning but were shut down by Kelsi Dunne in a 6-0 loss to No. 3 Alabama in the afternoon game of the Hibbett/Easton All-Alabama Classic at Liberty Park.
The Gamecocks (3-1) jumped on the Bulldogs (0-2) early in the second game to improve to 3-0 for the second time in three seasons. Dunne, a senior for the Crimson Tide (2-0), continued to have JSU's number by no-hitting the Gamecocks for the third time in her career.
In JSU's first game of the day, the Gamecocks saw their fifth, sixth and seventh spots in the order combine for six RBI in the win over the Bulldogs. Senior
Amanda Crow went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI, while sophomore
Krystal Ruth had two RBI singles. Senior
Sallie Beth Burch drove in a pair on her lone hit of the game, a single in the fourth inning.
Sophomore
Kelci Johnston went 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and one RBI, while junior
Abbey Stepp drove one in on a sacrifice fly in the first inning.
JSU's lead was just 4-2 after three innings, but it took advantage of AAMU miscues in a three-run fourth that gave the Gamecocks a 7-2 advantage. The Bulldogs only gave up two hits but walked a pair and committed a costly error that allowed JSU to open the game up.
Senior
Ashley Eliasson started the game in the circle for the Gamecocks and gave up just two runs on four hits in three innings of work. She struck out two before giving way to sophomore
Hilary Phillips (2-0), who earned the win with four innings of relief work. Phillips allowed two runs on one hit, a two run home run by Jasmin Riley, and fanned four to earn her second victory in as many days.
Cassan Brown (0-1) was tagged with the loss after surrendering nine runs, just three earned, on 12 hits in six innings in the circle. She walked three and failed to record a strikeout in the game.
In the nightcap, Dunne allowed just three runners to reach base on three walks and struck out 11 JSU batters in her seven innings in the circle. Stepp, freshman
Tyris Branford and sophomore
Krystal Ruth were the three Gamecocks to draw a walk.
The Crimson Tide did all of their damage at the plate in the first two innings, scoring four in the first and two more in the second. Jazlyn Lunceford singled in a pair and Courtney Conley belted a two-run homer in the first. Whitney Larsen's second-inning single drove in a pair and gave UA the deciding 6-0 lead early on.
Freshman
Tiffany Harbin (0-1) allowed all seven of Alabama's hits and six earned runs in four innings of work to suffer her first career loss. She struck out six and walked two before fellow freshman
Savanna Hennings came in to pitch a pair of hitless frames to close it out.
The Gamecocks will wrap up the three-day event on Sunday with an 11 a.m. meeting with Auburn.
