JACKSONVILLE –
Kyle Bluestein had a pair of hits and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead Jacksonville State to a 4-3 win over UAB as the Gamecocks won their fourth straight game on Wednesday night.
Tanner Freshour (2-0) picked up the win in relief for the Gamecocks, while
Todd Hornsby had a pair of strikeouts in the final two innings to earn his third save of the year. Dylan Munger (2-2) got stuck with the loss for the Blazers.
Jax State (6-14) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after
Coty Blanchard extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single and
Ben Waldrip hit his seventh home run of the year with a 2-run shot over the right field fence.
The Blazers (14-8) tied the game in the second after Jacob German drove in two runs with a single up the middle to make the score 2-2.
UAB took a 3-2 lead in the third inning after Jeff Schalk drove in a run with a RBI infield single to third base, but the Gamecocks tied the game in the home half of the third.
Scott Underwood led off with a double and moved to third on a groundout. Bluestein followed with a single up the middle to score Underwood and tie the game at 3-3.
Jax State took the lead in the seventh inning after Bluestein reached on a one-out single and
Erik Underwood followed with a double down the left field line. Bluestein then scored on a Blazer wild pitch for the final margin.
Michael Bishop and
Scott Underwood each added a pair of hits to join Bluestein, while Waldrip led the team with a pair of RBI. Ryan Ussery led the Blazers with a pair of hits.
The two teams completed a suspended game earlier in the day and UAB plated eight runs in the sixth inning as the Blazers claimed a 14-8 win over Jax State.
Jacob German (2-0) picked up the win after scattering a pair of hits in 3 1/3 innings, while JSU's
Hunter Rivers (0-2) got stuck with the loss for the Gamecocks.
Ivan DeJesus and Coy Arrowood each had three hits to lead UAB, while Keith DePew, Patrick Palmeiro and Michael Busby each had two hits.
Kyle Stone was 5-for-5 with a pair of RBI to lead the Gamecocks, while Blanchard finished with two hits. The five hits was the most by a Gamecock this season and the most since Bluestein had five vs Southeast Missouri State on May 28, 2011, in the OVC Tournament.
Jacksonville State opens Ohio Valley Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Eastern Kentucky. Friday's game is set for 2 p.m. and all three games can be heard on the JSU Sports Network with
