Gamecocks Even Series With Owls Behind Petrongolo & Golsan

KENNESAW, Ga. – Seniors Paschal Petrongolo and Gavin Golsan combined for six hits to lead Jacksonville State to a 10-5 win over Kennesaw State on Saturday at Stillwell Stadium to even to the weekend series with the Owls.

Petrongolo gave the Gamecocks (3-3) their first lead of the weekend with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Golsan in JSU's first at bat.  The Blackwood, New Jersey preseason All-American and All-Ohio Valley Conference selection delivered his first home run of the season with a solo shot to right field to stake sophomore lefty Jack Pierce with a 2-0 lead.  Pierce, from Pelham, Alabama turned in a quality start as he worked in to the sixth before the Owls scored three runs on a pair of home runs off Pierce.  He allowed five hits in 5.2 innings pitched and stuckout one in his second start of the season.  He induced eight ground ball outs and six fly ball outs in his stint on the mound.

After KSU (3-2) rallied in the sixth with three runs in the frame to take a 3-2 lead, the Gamecocks rallied from behind again for the third time this season.  JSU exploded for its first of two four-run innings in the final three plate appearances.  The inning was highlighted by redshirt-freshman Austin Green's first career home run to start the inning off of KSU's Mason Ward.  Ward lasted just 1.1 and was touched for four runs on four hits.

Green's round tripper ignited the JSU lineup as junior Peyton Williams drilled a one-out double to centerfield, followed by an infield single by Golsan.  Williams was plated on sophomore Clayton Daniel's RBI single to right field.  The base hit extended his hitting streak to 14 games and pushed his consecutive games on-base streak to 27 games.  Seniors Tyler Gamble and Elliott McCummings drove in the final two runs in the frame with a base hit and a fielder's choice respectively.

KSU responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning after a pair of doubles off of JSU's Colton Campbell.  Campbell, who was inserted for Pierce, earned the win after tossing 1.1 innings and carded a pair of strike outs.

Redshirt sophomore closer Justin Hoyt came in to complete the final two innings as JSU nursed its 6-4 lead after seven complete innings.  After a quick eighth inning, the Gamecocks expanded the lead with another four-run inning.  The ninth started just like the seventh for JSU with a leadoff home run off the bat of Golsan.  The Mountain Brook, Alabama outfielder now has two home runs in the first two weekends of the season.   Golsan swiped three bases each time he reached base.

Petrongolo was once again involved in the scoring for JSU as he reached base after being plunked.  Elliott McCummings was the last batter that KSU's Turner Watkins would face.  KSU's Brian Exley was greeted by Hayden White three-run blast over the right field wall.

KSU added a run off Hoyt in its final at bat before he recorded his first save of the season.

The two clubs will face off in a Sunday rubber game on the KSU campus.  First pitch is set for 12 p.m. CST.  The game will be available on the Gamecock Sports Network.
