CHARLESTON, Ill. – Shelby Kuryllo spoiled another stellar pitching performance by
Tiffany Harbin on Saturday, when her walk-off three-run home run extended the 2011 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament with a 3-2 Southeast Missouri win.
The Redhawks (31-29) had struggled to get anything against the JSU freshman before the final inning, when their three-runs were the first against Harbin in 13.1 innings in two games in the tournament. Their rally forces a winner-take-all game at 9 a.m. Sunday to decide the tournament champions and the OVC's automatic qualifier for the NCAA Tournament.
After the game that was originally scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Saturday was delayed until 8 p.m. because of rain, the Gamecocks (38-19) got one run in the first and another in the fourth to take a two-run lead that looked to be all Harbin would need.
After no-hitting the Redhawks on Friday to get to the title game, the native of Hazel Green, Ala., held SEMO scoreless on three hits through the first 6.1 innings. Back-to-back singles set up the game winning homer, spoiling a night that saw Harbin (24-10) strike out a career-high 14 batters.
Taylor Cowan (6-7) held the JSU offense at bay and worked out of trouble for most of the game, stranding nine Gamecock baserunners in her seven-inning complete game. She allowed two runs on six hits, while walking four and striking out two.
Six Gamecocks scattered their hits, all singles, with
Kelci Johnston and
Kristin Graham driving in their two runs. SEMO also scattered six hits among six players.
JSU was able to get one across in the top of the first against Cowan, but the Gamecocks left the bases loaded. A leadoff single by sophomore
Krystal Ruth and a pair of walks set up an RBI single from junior Graham that put JSU up 1-0 with no outs. Cowan worked out of it, striking out
Abbey Stepp and getting
Kaycee Crow and
Sallie Beth Burch to minimize the damage.
SEMO mounted its first threat of the tournament against Harbin in the home half of the third, when the Redhawks loaded the bases with just one out. The freshman settled down to strike out Carmen Fowler and get Renee Kertz to ground out with no damage done.
The Gamecocks stretched their lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth, thanks to a sacrifice fly from Johnston that followed singles from Burch and
Tess Echols.
SEMO threatened again in the fourth, when Cowan's leadoff double and a Harbin wild pitch put a runner at third with no outs. JSU's ace worked out of it again, striking out the next three batters to hold the lead at 2-0.
While Cowan continued to hold the Gamecocks at bay, Harbin allowed the first two batters to reach in the sixth but pitched out of it again. This time she struck out Cowan and then pinch hitter Jordan Learn after a Shelby Stein sacrifice bunt.
After a pair of one-out singles get things started in the seventh, SEMO finally broke through against Harbin, when Kuryllo launched her team-leading ninth home run of the season to hand the Redhawks the walk-off win.
