Gamecocks Sweep Siena on Saturday

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State posted a Saturday sweep of Siena on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium.

The Gamecocks (3-6) scored eight unanswered runs to take the opening game, 8-4, and wrapped up the day with a 7-1 win over the Saints (0-8). JSU has now put together three consecutive wins and will be looking for its first weekend sweep of the season on Sunday in the final game of the series with Siena. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium. Tickets are available online at JSUGamecockSports.com. JSU students and fans 18 years old and younger are admitted free. Due to the JSU women's basketball quarterfinal contest in the 2022 ASUN Women's Basketball Championship, the game will not be carried on ESPN+ or the Gamecock Sports Network. Live stats will be available at JSUGamecockSPorts.com.

Putting together big run producing innings by the offense along with solid pitching from the Gamecocks' staff was the key to Saturday's pair of wins. JSU used a four-run second inning to erase a 4-0 Saints lead in the afternoon contest and broke open a 1-0 game with a four-run third inning. Jax State's pitchers combined for 30 strikeouts in the two games, including nine by freshman Tanner Jones, who started the second game. Junior T.J. Reeves collected four hits, including a double and drove in four runs on the day. Combined, JSU touched Siena pitching for 22 hits, seven doubles and a pair of home runs. Sophomore Derrick Jackson, Jr. posted a two-out solo home run in the third inning of game one, while senior Alex Strachan belted another two-out home run for the Gamecocks in the sixth inning. In the twinbill, JSU had nine hits with two outs and drove in six of the 15 runs with two down in the frame.

JSU posted hits all throughout the lineup in game one, led by senior Isaac Alexander and sophomore Mason Maners. The two had a multi-hit game and Alexander added two RBI. Reeves carded three of his four hits in the second game and all three RBI. Senior Cole Frederick finished with a pair of doubles, while sophomore Kody Putnam had a two-hit game in the second match up.

The Saints started hitting and scoring right off of the bus with a run in the first and three in the second inning of the first game off of JSU starter Reid Fagerstrom. Fagerstrom went the first three innings with four strikeouts and held Siena off the scoreboard after the offense put together four runs. The Gamecocks' pitchers would not allow a Siena run over the next 14 innings until a run was posted in the visitors column in the eighth inning of game two.

Junior Isaiah Magwood covered 4.1 innings and gave up one hit and striking out seven Saints. Freshman AJ Causey closed out the final 1.2 innings with a hit and three strikeouts.

In game two, Jones established a new career-best with nine strikeouts and scattering a pair of hits in five innings. Senior Dylan Hathcock and senior Trey Fortner combined to toss the final four frames with seven strikeouts between the duo.
