2011: Appeared in nine of the Gamecocks’ 11 games as a sophomore…made one catch for seven yards against Georgia State on Sept. 17…had one kickoff return for 19 yards at Murray State on Oct. 1.
2010: Saw action in 10 of the Gamecocks’ 12 games as a sophomore, earning the start at tight end at Eastern Kentucky on Nov. 6…made the most of his first start. Hauling in two catches for 14 yards…on the year, had four catches for 21 yards and two touchdowns…scored his first career touchdown on Oct. 9 at UT Martin on a four-yard pass from Coty Blanchard…caught his second two weeks later, a three-yard pass from Blanchard, against Austin Peay.
2009: Appeared in nine games as a reserve as a true freshman for the Gamecocks.
HIGH SCHOOL: Played for Scott Roberts at Swainsboro High School…finished season with more than 90 tackles and had his best game of the year vs Vidalia, where he had 10 tackles, including seven solo stops…was an honorable mention All-Region selection…team captain…also lettered in basketball and track.
PERSONAL: Full name is Denzel Chequez Cheeks…son of LaWanda Bell and Kelvin Cheeks…born on March 16, 1991…has one older sister, Netris, and one younger sister, Kim…his cousin, Dewight Smith, currently plays football at Middle Tennessee…majoring in sociology at JSU.
