2010 OUTLOOK: Will be an asset to have him back this year after missing most of last season with an injury…certainly a spark to the offense…coming back from the injury, probably will not be an every game player at the beginning of the year, but should be ready to go full-time by conference play…one of the most valuable players on the team…one of the best defensive players on the team…one of the most consistent offensive players and helps get the team going…one of the fastest players on the team and has good running instincts…does a great job of setting the table for the middle of the order and is a leader on the infield.
SUMMER BASEBALL: Played for the Bethesda Big Train and posted a .301 batting average in 2007…was voted team Most Valuable Player and was voted to the 2007 Cal Ripken League All-Star team after going a perfect 19-for-19 on stolen bases…was voted to the Big Train All-Decade Team as a second baseman.
JSU CAREER: (2009) Received a medical redshirt after missing the majority of the season, due to an injury…played and started the first seven games of the season, batting .258 with a pair of doubles…also had a pair of steals to become Jacksonville State’s career leader with 71 stolen bases (81 attempts)…
(2008) Earned first-team All-Ohio Valley Conference honors as a junior…started 52 games and batted .332…missed the first six games of the season after having shoulder surgery and did not return to the field until March 21 to open OVC play vs Murray State…started his first 12 games as the DH and started the final 40 games at 2B…batted .332, with 54 runs, 13 doubles one triple and 39 RBI…was third on the team with 23 walks and only struck out 20 times in 208 at-bats…led the team with 15 stolen bases and is just one shy of the career record of 70…enters the season on an eight-game hitting streak…had 19 multiple-hit games and nine multiple-RBI games…was named the OVC Player of the Week on May 12 after hitting .550, while scoring eight runs, hitting three doubles and had nine RBI vs Tennessee Tech…got off to a slow start at the plate and was just batting .185 until the second OVC series at Austin Peay, where he began an 11-game hitting streak, where he raised his average to .309…had four 3-hit games during that span…averaged dipped to .297 after the Morehead series, but he had a hit in 15 of the final 16 games to finish the season at .332…tied his career-high with four hits vs Tennessee Tech on 5/11…(2007) Earned first-team All-Ohio Valley Conference honors as a sophomore after setting the school’s single-season record for stolen bases with 31…started 59 of JSU’s 60 games and finished second on the team with a .359 batting average…led the Ohio Valley Conference in runs scored (65) and stolen bases (31)…finished season ranked 28th nationally in stolen bases…finished tied for second on team with 25 multiple-hit games… posted his best month of the season in March, where he batted .450, going 36-for-80 with 14 RBI….hit first career home run vs Northwestern State on March 10, driving in a career-best five runs…also hit a home run at Samford on 3/31…had a 13-game hitting streak during the season, ending in the OVC Championship vs Austin Peay…had a career-high four hits (7 AB) and scored four runs at Georgia State (5/8)…struck out just 19 times in 234 at bats, which ranked him 90th nationally in toughest to strike out…batted .495 in his leadoff spot…(2006) Started 57-of-59 games as a true freshman and put together the Gamecocks’ fifth-best batting average (.312) and a team-high 23 steals, earning him Second-Team All-OVC honors, as well as OVC All-Freshman accolades…hit .400 (6-for-15) with two doubles, six runs scored and three RBI in the OVC Tournament to earn All-Tournament honors…his 23 steals was the eighth-most in a season in JSU history, just four shy of the school record…hit safely in 40 of his last 49 games…recorded 22 multi-hit games as a freshman, including eight games with three hits…stormed onto the collegiate scene in the opening weekend, going 7-for-10 with three stolen bases, two runs scored and an RBI in a three-game series at Southeastern Louisiana… struck out just 16 times in 234 at bats…led the team with eight sacrifices and a .632 success percentage advancing runners…batted .412 (28-for-68) with runners in scoring position, .933 (14-for-15) with runners on third with less than two outs, and .556 (5-for-9) with the bases loaded.
HIGH SCHOOL: Prepped four years at Pelham High School for Bill Robinson and Mike O’Berry…named team Most Valuable Player as a senior in 2005…was team captain in 2005 and also won the Inspiration team award and won the Silver Bat and Gold Glove awards…named to the All-Region 6 team and earned All-County honors in Shelby County as a senior…played in the East-West All-Star game…helped Pelham win the 2004 State Championships as a junior…won back to back Shelby County Championships and won the Region 6 Championship as a sophomore in 2003…also lettered in basketball at Pelham…played on the 2003 and 2004 Helena Dizzy Dean teams…played in the Arizona Fall League in both 2004 and 2005 and attended the 2005 World Wood Bat Showcase…named to the 2005 Rivals.com Top 100 Middle Infielders in the nation.
PERSONAL: Full name is Roland “Bert” Hayes Smith…son of Roland and Linda Smith…born on August 4, 1986…has two brothers and three sisters…lists Jimmy Rollins as his favorite player and the Atlanta Braves as his favorite team…graduated in the fall of 2009 with a degree in Criminal Justice…currently enrolled in graduate school, with a concentration in Emergency Management/Homeland Security.
