Gamecocks Release First Depth Chart Then Practice in Shells

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State head coach Bill Clark released his first depth chart of the 2013 preseason on Friday and then the Gamecocks worked for two hours in shells on Burgess-Snow Field.
The Gamecocks got in some team work and then some situational drills in the heat of another humid August day, and Clark seemed pleased with his unit after that workout concluded. He praised the newcomers on the scout team that arrived just two days ago with the start of classes and used Friday to get more acclimated to the turf in JSU Stadium, a surface similar to what the Gamecocks will play on every week this season.
"I thought we had a good day," Clark said. "The heat is back, and they handled it a lot better today. We worked out in the stadium, which is always good to get out on the turf where we are going to play. We had the influx of new guys that came in when school started and they are doing a really good job. It helps us, just from the look team that we need and they are getting better every day."
Clark acknowledged the monotony of practicing against each other over and over again but also noted it was an issue every team in the country is fighting through. He hopes his team will do just that and fight through it with just a week until kickoff at Alabama State.
"Us and probably every other team in America are tired of beating on each other and tired of the practice mentality, but we're not there yet," Clark added. "We've got another week before we get to play, and, like I said, a lot of other people are in the same boat as us. We just have to keep fighting through it, keep getting better and doing all of the little things and get ready for another good day tomorrow."
The practice came just a short time after Clark released his first two-deep, a list that acknowledges the work of some players but one that he also claims has several players just on the verge of sliding onto.
"These are guys that have worked hard," he said. "They've worked hard to get into that two-deep. There are some guys that I've talked about that are right behind them. We don't list those guys because everybody asks for a two-deep, but they are two-and-a-halfs as I call them. I feel like we've got three guys at a lot of spots that can play, so there were a few guys that got left off. Hats off to the guys that got to be in that two-deep."
Clark mentioned the importance of his special teams guys, who aren't included on the offensive and defensive depth chart that were released. His team will also see several people on the field, not just those in the two-deep.
"I'd like to do a special teams depth chart because those guys are starters to us. I think what you will see with us is you will see a lot of guys play. The starter is the guy that gets to walk out and sometimes he's going to get to stay out there more than others, but there is going to be a bunch of people rolling. Hopefully that's what this depth chart reflects."
The complete depth chart is listed below.
