2013:
Appeared in nine games and started six at quarterback for the Gamecocks as a junior in 2013, his first season after transferring from Minnesota…was a second-team All-Ohio Valley Conference pick after throwing for 1,435 yards and six touchdowns on 102-of-178 passing, an average of 179 yards per game…stormed onto the scene in his debut, earning OVC Newcomer of the Week honors after entering the season opener at Alabama State on Aug. 31 in the second quarter before leading scoring drives of 68 and 75 yards in a 24-22 win…threw for 216 yards and two touchdowns in the win…his 127.44 passing efficiency was fourth in the OVC, while his 1,608 yards were third…had five games with over 200 passing yards, including a season-high 285 on 22-for-35 passing vs. Murray State on Sept. 28…threw for 263 yards one week earlier at Georgia State…tossed two touchdown passes twice: in the ASU game and at UT Martin on Oct. 5…threw his first touchdown pass as a Gamecock to Anthony Johnson midway through the third quarter at Alabama State…his longest pass of the year was a 50-yard strike to Johnson on Sept. 21 at Georgia State.

PRIOR TO JSU: Played in eight games for the University of Minnesota as a sophomore in 2012, starting six of them…completed 65 of his 116 passes for a .560 completion percentage…threw for 853 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions…played in eight games as a freshman in 2011 with two starts under center…saw action in his first collegiate game as a true freshman at USC and responded by nearly leading the Gophers to a fourth-quarter comeback…made first career start at quarterback vs. Michigan in Week Five, which was the first time a freshman started at QB for the Gophers since 1984…finished season 26-of-54 for 309 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

HIGH SCHOOL: Graduate of Bishop Miege High School…led his team to a 6-4 record last season…led Stags to a 12-2 mark and a Kansas Class 4A State Championship as a junior in 2009…two-time Honorable Mention All-Eastern Kansas League selection…completed 147-of-277 passes (53.1 percent) his last season…threw for 2,643 yards, 21 touchdowns and just seven interceptions in 2010…completed 144-of-250 passes (57.6 percent) for 2,524 yards, 29 touchdowns and 11 interceptions as a junior…coached by former Kansas City Chief Pro Bowler Tim Grunhard.

PERSONAL: Full name is Max Garrett Shortell…born on August 22, 1992, in Kansas City, Mo…son of Tom and Susan Shortell…has three older brothers, Eric, Jack and Neil…brother Neil, plays football at Emporia State…brother Eric played baseball at South Alabama and then in the Kansas City Royals organization…brother Jack played basketball at NAIA Baker University…majoring in business at JSU.
